Judge's Captaincy: Team USA's Star Player Leads in WBC (2026)

Judge's Captaincy: A Blend of Pride and Responsibility in the WBC

The World Baseball Classic (WBC) is set to begin, and with it, the opportunity for Team USA to showcase their talent. But amidst the excitement, a deeper sentiment resonates with captain Aaron Judge, a three-time American League MVP. As he prepares to lead his team, Judge reflects on the weight of his role, especially in light of recent global events.

In a world currently grappling with the aftermath of the U.S.-Israel joint strikes on Iran, Judge's words carry a profound meaning. He acknowledges the blessings of being able to play the sport he loves, surrounded by his family and teammates, while also recognizing the sacrifices made by those who serve their country.

"A lot of crazy things happening in the world right now," Judge said. "I count my blessings every day that I get a chance to come out here, play the game that I love, have my family around me, and be around these great guys."

As the captain, Judge addressed his team, emphasizing the importance of seizing the opportunity to bond and get to know each other. This is his first time leading Team USA in the WBC, despite several other players on the roster having previous international experience.

"I flipped (the jersey) over and looked at the front where it said USA and for me it just really hit home," he said. "I started thinking of — some of us probably have people who have served in the military in our family or people we know who have served in the military."

The WBC, dating back to its inception in 2006, has seen Japan emerge as a dominant force, winning three times. The U.S. has secured its lone title in 2017, and this year's tournament promises to be a competitive affair.

With a young, talented pitching staff, including last year's Cy Young Award winners, the Americans are poised to make a strong showing. However, the team's success will depend on the players' ability to come together and embrace the responsibility of representing their country.

"He said, 'I want to do this for every serviceman and woman who protects our freedom,'" manager Mark DeRosa recalled about his conversation with Paul Skenes. "At the end of the day, that's all that needs to be said. There's something very special about representing your country. We take it seriously. We want to enjoy the game and have fun, but certainly understand the responsibility that comes with it."

As the tournament unfolds, Judge and his team will face challenges and opportunities alike. The question remains: will they rise to the occasion and make the U.S. proud?
